I'm a big fan of TV adverts. Making TV ads requires a lotta creativity. They guys behind all those cool ads you see on TV, actually go through a lot to pick a tune to go along with the commercials. Like the Yeah Yeah Yeah's song in the Adidas advert or any of those cool tunes from the iPod commercials.

Tiger Toys' i-Dog and the Push pin lamp

Every once in a while we have something for dog lovers like those cool Fido Bags. Well, here's another one. The i-Dog. Here's what it does - it puts on a light show, makes limited head movements, plays back and responds to audio connected through its body, plays back a limited variety of songs stored in its own memory, and responds to input from a built-in microphone.

Just remember, you need to feed it with music five minutes every hour and over time, this will give i-Dog a “personality” of “rock/punk” (red outer ring of lights), “dance/techno” (green), or “hip hop/rap” (yellow). Read more.

Cardboard Helicopter and WORKSHOPPED

Bus wraps

Bus wraps are cool. Everytime I see a good one here in Singapore I try to get a good shot of it on my cam. Below is HBO's Six Feet Under bus wrap as a part of the ad promotion campaign for their season one DVD. The ad was accepted in New York and Chicago but authorities rejected the ad in San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Cars drove me nuts as a kid. I had a huge collection back then and even now. And I always had a thing for those cool looking cop cars as a kid. Well, this is the new Dodge Magnum SXT for Police Special Service Uses. Look at it - if a cop driving that gave me a ticket for speeding, my first reaction would be, 'You mind if I take a look into your car, officer?'

Porsche Panamera

German sports and luxury carmaker Porsche will invest 1bn euros (£691m; $1.2bn) developing a four-door coupe that will be on the roads by 2009.

The Panamera coupe will be Porsche's fourth base-model in production, alongside the 911, Boxster and Cayenne. An artist's rendering of the car shows a low-slung, four-door sports car with narrow side windows and flowing lines.

Unlike the Cayenne, which Porsche developed with Volkswagen AG, the Panamera's production will be a strictly Porsche product. A site for manufacturing the new model hasn't been decided upon, but Porsche said it is looking at a site in Leipzig where its Cayenne and Carrera GT models are currently produced.

Following the Pininfarina Design Team for the red dot design award for the design team of the year is the Adidas design department under Michael Michalsky in 2005.

Today, approximately 200 designers from ten nations are working under the guidance of “Global Creative Director” Michael Michalsky – in 1992, it was just 21 designers worldwide. There are now three teams; one at the company’s headquarters in Herzogenaurach, another one in Portland for the American market, and a third one in Tokyo for Japan and Asia.

On 4 July 2005, Michael Michalsky will travel to Essen to receive on behalf of the whole design team the “Radius” challenge trophy in recognition of the “red dot: design team of the year” award. The “Radius” will be handed over by the previous year’s winner, the Pininfarina design team. The Aalto-Theater opera house in Essen is the opulent setting for the award ceremony gala, with more than 1,200 guests expected from the fields of design, business, media, politics and culture.

Michael Michalsky, 36, is Global Creative Director of the adidas-Salomon AG in Herzogenaurach, heading a team of 155 colleages. He studied design management at the London College of Fashion.

The Risom Lounge Chair (1941) by Danish designer Jens Risom is testament to the simplicity and ingenuity that is so often found in timeless modern designs. Widely known as the first chair to be designed for Knoll, it brought the natural materials and understated form of Scandinavian design to large scale U.S. production.

Each piece is stamped with the Knoll Studio logo and the designer’s signature.

Well, for today, I spotted scroll and Nuba by Kirsten Antje Hoppert and Steffen Kroll from Studio Vertijet.

Scroll can be used separately as a chair, or as a couch or sofa when used in combination with additional elements, and can thus be slept upon or simply used as somewhere to rest your legs.

Almost like a sculpture, NUBA grows out of the floor – the sofa seems to be made of stone. The design is based on the need to form a voluminous, commanding furniture sculpture that offers optimum seating comfort.

Studio Vertijet was founded in 2000 by Kirsten Antje Hoppert and Steffen Kroll. Kirsten Hoppert, born in Plauen in 1973, studied interior design from 1992 to 2001 at the School of Art and Design in Halle where she received her diploma. Steffen Kroll, born in 1968 in Harzgerode, studied product design at the School of Art and Design in Halle from 1992 to 1997. Together, the designers completed a graduate program in which they developed a pre-fab house. Studio Vertijet works for the companies COR, BREE, Jab Anstötz, SKIA, and on numerous freelance projects.

ROJAK is a series of parties to celebrate local independent works. Be it Art. Architecture. Words. Music. Fashion. Food. Film. Anything CREATIVE! The purpose is to share and promote your creative ideas with fellow Local Creators. Thereby, garnering feedback and also collaborations. The name ROJAK is derived from a Malay dish, a mixed salad of vegetables and fruit. ROJAK is thus used to describe mixture and variety. ROJAK will also be served at the parties.

Sadly I wont be able to make it this week. But if you're in Singapore and you're free this Friday night then head down to Block 80, Nicoll Highway, #01-82. The presentation starts at 10 PM and the party continues till late after the presentations. Have fun.

Sydney Design Week 05, Designers at Playsam

I had a few people writing in telling me they liked those cool wooden toys by Playsam. Si I thought I'd write somethin about the designers at Playsam. But before that, some info on the Sydney Design Week - Sydney Design 05 - Australia's annual International Festival of Design.

Over 16 days (6-21 August) and more than 40 exhibitions and events, Sydney Design 05 will explore and celebrate international and national design across a broad range of disciplines – from art, architecture and interiors; furniture, lighting and other product design; to graphic, fashion or digital design. Australia ’s longest-running design festival has gone from strength to strength in recent years, attracting record participation in 2004. Hosted by the Powerhouse Museum – Sydney ’s own design museum. As their website says they've changed the name this year. The dropped the 'week' from design week as the festivals gonna be on for 16 days.In this year’s program you will see and hear extraordinary design talent, from the up-and-coming to international design superstars. So stay tuned.

Well, most of you designers should know K10K. I visit their site often, but I dont really frequent their online store. I decided to click on it today, and guess what? Im in love with those cool K10K t-shirts. Well if you like them as well, get them at the K10K store.

Playsam is a Scandinavian brand which designs wooden toys. And believe me, they are really good at what they do.Based in Sweden, Playsam has won several Swedish design awards, the Streamliner was awarded the Swedish Design Classic 1998 by the Swedish National Museum and the Excellent Swedish Design prize by the Association of Swedish Form, and the Rocking Rabbit was awarded the Excellent Swedish Design prize by the Association of Swedish Form.

PUMA and Converse are two brands whose designs I always look forward to. So this time around PUMA announced it's collabration with fashion designer Alexander McQueen to design a new line of men's and women's footwear which is expected to be out by Spring 2006. Read more over at Dexigner.

SUPERHAPPYBUNNY is an LA based Graphic and Product Design Studio. Since its birth in 1999, Superhappybunny has grown into a conceptual design source with innovative and wide ranging projects .

The Soocoop Sound project was a collaboration between the studio's Hayes Urban and designer Enrico Ripose. With their aluminum spun bodies and rich sound, the speakers broke the conventional black box syndrome in sound design.

Self Heating Soup is an in house concept utilizing table grade salt to trigger a heated chemical reaction within an insulated can.

Earlier last month, Luca Et Studio bagged 3 of 6 design awards at the American Institute of Architects Design Awards.Jennifer Luce's San Diego firm's awards included Honor Awards for remodeling the two-story Burton home in Cardiff so deftly that one juror thought it was all new, renovating a building for Extraordinary Desserts bakery and cafe in Little Italy and Nissan Design America's new design studio in Farmington Hills, Mich.

I took a peek into their website and found some good stuff under furniture and workspaces and installation art, and I love the interface of their website. Check it out.

The guys at Core77, feature some really cool design firms on their studio bullits section. There was something about Amsterdam based Studio Frederik Roije. I clicked to their website and couldnt take my eyes off until I read about all their products and furniture designs. Here are some good ones.

Those are the tipsy glasses. They sure are tipsy. And no glass is shaped the same.

Lampscapes were also seen at this year's Salone de Mobile in Milan.

The China Cabinet. Pocelain boxes stapled placed in the kiln, and the stoke process creates the ultimate shape. And the website says the shape is never the same for two.

I like this. The Tripple Chair. A chair, table and lamp in one.

The 'New Beetle' is set to get an updated look and a BIGGER engine, seven years after it's introduction. Design changes are subtle. The biggest changes are around the wheel wells and bumpers which get a more angular, modern look.
Taillights and headlights were also given some tweaks. The interior is also slightly changed. The instrument panel will now include a "cluster design," with chrome touches on the instruments and air vents. The automaker says it will release additional information on the vehicle later this summer.
Stay glued to get the first look in September. Thats a long time, I know. But do stay glued.

I did a project for Nike and my reason for doing it was to design a shoe for cosmonauts in space. I did actually design this shoe but it became more of a fashion statement unfortunately. It's the one thing that I'd really love to do and I think possibilities will emerge.

Jaxter Artist Awards, New ID Design Studio

The Jaxter Artist Awards is an Australian based initiative aiming to support young artists. Over the last 3 years they have run award programs for musicians and designers and at the same time have donated 20% of proceeds to the Inspire Foundation (www.inspire.org.au) helping to fight youth suicide.
Only 1 July 2005 they plan to launch an Asia-Pacific T-shirt Design Competition (www.jaxter.net), open to residents of New Zealand. The winning design will receive US$2,000 and there is also a US$500 prize for the entrant who refers the winner. We are planning on donating 20% of proceeds to charity the Red Cross of Australia which carries out a wide range of work throughout the region.

Maybach Exelero

And presenting the Maybach Exelero. Developers at Maybach designed the custom model with the participation of students from Pforzheim College. The Exelero was built by the prototype specialists at Stola in Turin, Italy. There are no plans to produce the model in series.

I guess all you design addicts out there know that the DESIGNMAI, is happening in Berlin right now. I've been reading about them for a while and this is their third year. Berlin's gonna be housefull with exhibitions, presentations, awards and parties.
You probably also read about it over at Mocoloco. And yeah, some lucky guy won a Jimi, for answering a question about a designer on Mocoloco's website.

Well, there's something else associated with DESIGNMAI, that you might not be familiar about. It's the play-award. Nike and DESIGNMAI collaborate to run this competition for upcoming young designers in 2004. Throughout this season in Berlin, Nike will hold an exhibition to present ideas and entries that pursue new functional approaches and stand out on account of their unconventionality. So if you're gonna be in Berlin, dont miss it.

The big name in Mosaic products, Bisazza teamed up with Mini cooper to dress the car in thousands of small glass stones. They made their debut at Salone Internationale del Mobile in Milan. And, they have a whole tour planned out. They will make an appearance at Berlin and also at the ICFF (International contemporary furniture fair) in New york.

Nido in Italian means 'Nest'. For the automobile manufacturer, it means safety.

For over thiry years, Italian automobile manufacturer Pininfarina, has been investing on car research and development, and issues involving environment, alternative energy sources, fuel consumption and more efficient vehicle construction. This time, they came out of their drawing boards with a new concept - The NIDO. It provides an ergonomic protective inner sled shell and creature comforts in a striking two seater prototype.

I was doing trying to learn some Yoga the other day. They're not my thing, but I remember this one posture, where you have to stand on you head, with your legs up in the air. Well, I guess thats how you should shop, when you're at Viktor & Rolf. Their new store in Milan sports an upside-down decor. Actually it's kinda cool. Everything that you expect to find on the floor, is above you, and everything that should be on the ceiling like chandeliers are on the floor. Hmmm.... Intresting?

Dutch designer Marike Andeweg wins iF Product design Award 2005

Marike Andeweg, a dutch designer is the proud winner of the iF Product Designer Award. And she's just 26.

Her story. She started off with Dutch furniture manufacturer Pastoe, before launcing her own firm. Soon the Dutch design market recognized her work and she went on to sweep international accolades.

What makes something so special that you fall in love with it? Marike gives the answer: a combination op pure shapes, varied structures, convincing proportions and a proper character.

She received the award on March 10th in Hannover, Germany.

James Irvine designed this Sofa bed, named JI:1 for CBI Design, Sweden. The Sofa can be easily transformed into a bed by removing four tubes and lowering the back.

Also on CBI's website I found these coat hangers called Gobble by designer Thomas Bernstrand. I like the idea, of hanging clothes that way. Everytime I change chlothes, I'd be least bothered to put them into the laundry bag, or wardrobe in the case of jackets or coats. And, I like stuff to be messy
around my room. Gobble seems like just the thing I need.

Barber Osgerby

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby met at Royal College of Art in 1992. Many would know them for one of their first project together, the Loop Table which was produced by Isokon Plus in the UK, and Cappellini in Italy. The Loop Table is in the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.

Other notable products rom the duo, are Lunar - bath accessories, some cool Levis hangers, and the Portsmouth bench.

MIKRO series - Sam Buxton

I was browsing through some design stuff over at the Design Museum Collection, when I came across Sam Buxton and his MIKRO series. The MIKRO series are fold-up sculptures of various things as you can see below in the pictures. What surprised me was, all this started from a business card which he wanted to be different. He made for himself a flat stainless steel business card, which caught the attention of a manufacturer at Design Museum's exhibition in 2001, and that was the beggining of MIKRO-man. MIKRO-man has his own website too, which has a cool interface. My favourite has to be the MIKRO-house. Thinking about getting one of those.

Alain Berteau

Alain Berteau was born in 1971 in Aachen, Germany, and graduated architect in 1995 at La Cambre, Brussels.He soon established his brussels-based architectural, interior and product design activities. Alain Berteau is teaching furniture design at La Cambre high school in Brussels, and he is one designer you should look out for.

The UV - Nomadic house, designed with the collaboration of Bob Starc. UV stands for Unite de Villegiature (vacation stay unit). UV is neither a trailer or a chalet. It is a mobile and telescopic little house, offering new ways to fit and maximize any leisure opportunity.UV was awarded an "Ingeniosity" mention at the "Petites Machines à Habiter" international competition. I also found this quote by Mies van der Rohe on Berteau's website.
"Before you live in a glass house, you do not know how colourful nature is ..." - Mies van der Rohe.

Mood is a two-piece sofa system for residential and public uses. Moving one piece transforms the sofa into numerous configurations.

Pavane is a multi-purpose seat. A simple manipulation changes its typology from a bench to a reclining chair.

Sony Ericsson's impressive Line up at CeBIT 2005

Many were impressed by Sony Ericsson's new line up of phones and accessories at the CeBIT 2005.

I was more than impressed with their W800 Walkman. The first thing that comes to mind when talking about Sony, is their revolutionary walkman. I bet everyone of you had one at some point in your life, one that played your old cassettes - Nirvana, Deep Purple, Metallica. The W800 sports the feel of the walkman and is the first walkman branded mobile phone.

The Z800 was pretty cool too. Kinda looks like a competitor for the Motorola RAZR V3. Cant wait to get a look at these two in stores.

Now here's a surprise. A limited edition camera on wheels called the ROB-1, with a range of 50 meters. You can use your phone to steer it around and see what it sees on your display or monitor. I got to get my hands on one of these.

Sam and Jude - SUCK UK

Well, yeah we promised a write up of SUCK UK and their designers Sam and Jude. Here goes...

SUCK UK produce furniture, lighting, interior products and accessories. It was established in late 1999 and has grown to be a popular product design brand. You can read about their struggle in the beginning, and how they worked to bring the company to where it is today on their website. In fact their first studio was in the form of an empty room in a squatted embassy building in Primrose Hill. The only room without boards at the windows became their studio and a nearby phone-box the office. Two moves later, they are now based in a East End studio. Their Stuff is attracting a lot of attention from the press as you can see on the Press section of their site. The two people behind the success of SUCK UK, are designers Sam and Jude - batch of '96 (BA Product Design) - Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

Here are some cool stuff from SUCK UK...

The Kick Stool. It's got a magazine rack and sprung wheel system.

The Bottle Opener. It won the Gift of the Year 2002. We dint know there existed such an award. Check it out. GA-UK.

The Slide Light has got to be one of the coolest.

Create any mood with your own unique photographs using interchangeable slides, simply slot your images into place. To take slide photographs use standard slide film in your camera.

They also got some cool Tee's.

SUCK UK is now represented in all the big name department stores as well as loads of indie shops. And according to their website, the next few months will see them release some of the best new products to come out of the UK in a long time. We'll keep you updated on that.

Lit Coffee table

The Lit Coffee table comes from Generate (or Gnr8 as they spell it). GNR8 is about the interface between lighting, design & culture. They use Light to enhance the objects of their design.
I spent some time browsing their products, and there are quite a few on my 'to be posted' list. So, yeah. Watch this space.
This totally solid table illuminates either from the top, the bottom, or both. It comes with a variety of interchangeable colors or with any graphic you choose, and can be custom made to any size.

Rodolfo Dordoni

Rodolfo Dordoni, an Italian born architect whose work ranges across art direction, furnishing and lighting design, exhibitions, renovations, showroom and point of sale displays. We feature some of his lighting designs for Flos and his designs for Minotti.

You're gonna love this. The guys at Inflate led by their art director Nick Crosbie, make these really cool inflatable products. Thats the inflatable fruit tray and the inflatable picture frame. Below is the inflatable table lamp.

Now I've never heard of this before. I saw the ad on the papers today and I thought I definitely had to post it. Thats the new Motorola Thumbslip. And apparently it increases you text speed by upto 30%. The Thumbslips are made from space age materials and cast to fit your hand exactly. The whole thing is based on iTap technology which is a software solution that significantly increases the ease and speed and accuracy on text input in electronic devices.

Now when I read that on the papers, I immidietly clicked on the website which was along with the ad...... http://sg.motorola.com/pcs/thumbs
and thats when I realized that today was the first of April and I've been April Fooled!!!

Well, iTap is a very real and significant technology available now. Thumbslips however are just a bit of fun on April 1st. So if you too, like me, wanted a pair.... you've been April Fooled.

Giotto Stoppino - magazine rack

Our pick this week, from the infinite number of designers out there is Giotto Stoppino.
After studying at the faculties of architecture of Milan and of Venice, Stoppino worked with the Architetti Associati studio at Novara and later at Milan, from 1953 to 1968. Since 1968 he has had his own studio, operating in the fields of architecture, interior decoration and design. He received the "Compasso d'oro" prize in 1979 with the furniture Sheraton, designed for Acerbis and in 1991 with the Alessia doorhandle system manufactured by Olivari.
He has held lectures and conferences in numerous Italian and foreign cities.

This is a magazine rack, he designed for Kartell. It is composed of four pockets to put magazines, is easy to position in any setting. It has a central handle that makes it easy to move.

Clocky - An MIT Media Lab Research Project

Having trouble gettin' outta that cozy bed? Let Clocky help.

Believe us, we know exactly how it feels going to sleep after a night of hard partyin' and having to wake up at 7 am for that important meeting with a client, or for that project presentation at school.
You hit snooze when the alarm rings and promise yourself that you'd be on your feet in two minutes. Thats probably the longest two minutes ever. Now, this is where Clocky can help.

When the alarm clock goes off and the snooze button is pressed, Clocky will roll off the bedside table and wheel away, bumping mindlessly into objects on the floor until it eventually finds a spot to rest. Minutes later, when the alarm sounds again, the sleeper must get up out of bed and search for Clocky. This ensures that the person is fully awake before turning it off. Small wheels that are concealed by Clocky's shag enable it to move and reposition itself, and an internal processor helps it find a new hiding spot every day.

It's just an academic research project and is not commercially available at this time. But expect it to be out soon. A final cost is estimated at under $20. It could also be available in several soft and durable designs.

Instant chair - FELD

The Instant chair was designed by Alain Berteau for FELD, a design company located just outside of Antwerp.

Cut from a small beech plywood panel, the chairs come in ultra-flat packages and are user-assembled in two minutes. The collection offers various typologies and finishes to fit any taste and need.
Alain Berteau runs an award-winning architecture and product design studio. He teaches furniture design at La Cambre School of Arts in Brussels. For FELD, he designed the Instant, Shift, Fence and Bop collections.

red dot awards - product design 2005

The results of the red dot award for the best in product design was announced earlier this month. Congratulation winners!!!

According to the jury the designers in the category “Living and Sleeping” have done their homework. They have observed the consumers and have realised that there is no “universal consumer”. There are also great developments in less typical design disciplines such as life science design, i.e. medical products, appliances and aids.
“Our decades of work as design promoters are now extensively coming to fruition“, says Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, the initiator of the red dot design award.

Here are some good ones from the winners' list.

The Facett, by two of my favourite French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Roset Möbel GmbH, won the 'best of the best' award under Living rooms and Bedrooms. If I'm not wrong, they grabbed the 'best of the best' award at the IMM Cologne too.

The WAVE music system by Bose won accolades in the Media and Home electronics category.

The Monaco V4 by TAG Heuer won the 'best of the best' under the Jewellery, Fashion and accessories category.

Award ceremony and special exhibition
The festive award ceremony takes place on 4 July 2005 in the Essen Aalto Theatre. The award-winning works will be exhibited in the special exhibition “Design Innovations 2005 – red dot award: product design” from 5 July to 7 August 2005 in the Essen red dot design museum. The red dot design museum houses the largest permanent exhibition of contemporary design world-wide.

Pochly Bardel - Lighting

Pochly Claude Bardel is the founder of Tosh Design, Inc. Based in Miami, Florida, the company believes that the basic pleasure of being a designer is to explore new designs that will serve as exclusive, creative and functional ideas in today's contemporary design industry.

We found some good lighting designs over at Tosh Design. My favourite had to be the 'Tree' lamp, with that circular arrangement on top.

Capelli stool - Carol Catalano

Carol Catlano is our designer of the week. Her creative interest found a focus when she entered the Rhode Island School of Design after high school and discovered industrial design. "After the first project, I knew I had found my life's work," she says.

Designed by Carol Catalano for Herman Miller, the Capelli stool is a comfortable, low seat for the home or office.
The inspiration for Carol Catalano's innovative design came from a very down-to-earth source. "Most of my work is fairly technical in nature, so I thought it would be fun to take on a project just for fun." Catalano says. "In pondering how to improve on the simple function of a stool I found myself observing the simple act of intertwining the fingers of my hands."

Starck Hotels - Fall in love all over again

Internationally renowned lifestyle designer Philippe Starck has a dream to "make a place where people are more awesome, are more sexy, are more smart, more sparkling... " and he announced today a global partnership for a new ultra-luxury hotel brand, Starck Hotels, that he says will make people fall in love all over again.

Starck said he is granting Geneva based F6, an exclusive Master License Agreement (MLA) to develop, market and operate the brand with Starck providing all design and conceptual support. Starck Hotels will be a subsidiary of F6; formed to launch the brand, work with Starck to develop a new template for an ultra-luxury hotel and identify prime locations to work with partners towards the development of up to 35 hotels in prime locations around the world in the next five years.

Steelcase - Think

I was writing an article on C2C and sustainable design trends, and I did a small research on the Think chair by Steelcase. And did you know that the Think chair is 99 percent recyclable, and made without benzene, lead, mercury or solvents. The guys at Steelcase worked with McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry (MBDC), selecting only materials considered safe to the environment. And also with the Institute of Product Development in Denmark to conduct a complete Life Cycle assessment.

The designers over at Offecct are just great. We've been seeing a lot of their products lately and everything is so eye-catching that we wanted to post their entire collection in one post. Clearly that wouldnt be possible.
OFFECCT was established in 1990 in Tibro, southern Sweden.

The drawers of the Rebellious Cabinet will never all be closed.
When closing one drawer, the one next to it will open a bit.

Okay you gotta love this. Those are blistercases developed and designed by Pilots, a product design company based in Amsterdam. So no more searching for lost painkillers in your handbag or pocket. The blistercases can be used for Saridon and Finimal strips. And, remember to get a doctor's prescription, if you're gonna get those painkillers, to fill it in.
